Abstract

In the world of infrastructure, data centers are the new kid on the block. They power our digital worlds while drawing massive amounts from our much more senior power, water, and gas grids. Now, with new societal priorities for the 21st century, it is time for them to evolve, revolutionize our physical infrastructure, and fulfill the growing needs for sustainability, circular economics, and digital equity! It is time for the data center to lead the infrastructure world!

This talk will examine how data centers can shape the rapidly growing interplays between the digital and urban landscapes. How we must bring a new perspective to both their design and infrastructure in general. And what this means for those in our communities. Crucially, it will examine projected needs for the coming decades. Past, present, and future ideas will be examined from around the world seeking to answer the question: How do data centers answer our urban infrastructure needs of the 21st century?
